How can organisms subject to haplodiploid sex determination have no sons but still have grandsons?

I'm reading about haplodiploid sex determination in ants and I've been informed that it leads to a situation where the male drones will have no father or sons, but will still have grandfathers and can potentially have grandsons. I don't really understand how this situation arises or is possible, can anyone shed some light?
